During twenty years teaching and training in schools and commerce I had always been a firm supporter of complimentary therapies. My interest grew further still with my studies in yoga and meditation and I went on to complete a Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling, a further two years training in Couple Counselling, as well as training in CBT, (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy).
Resolving difficult issues which may be holding you back can lead to a healthier, happier more successful life. Life has a habit of presenting us with challenges, often in the form of problems or crises. We can experience these as painful and confusing thoughts and feelings. Most of the time we can manage to cope with these difficulties in our lives, however, sometimes we can experience them as anxiety, depression or a sense of hopelessness.
If counselling is something you have never experienced before you may wonder what to expect. Clients usually come along with a difficulty that is troubling them which they want to discuss; others may not know what it is about but are just feeling anxious or unable to cope with life. Often a client may come along with a presenting problem and then find there are other things they would like to talk about.
Sometimes painful emotions can be overwhelming. Feelings of being powerless to change things or unable to cope with such strong feelings leads some people to self-harm as it seems the only way of expressing and dealing with very difficult feelings. It often feels like the pain of self-harm can, for a short time, take away the other pain.
