These as their name suggests are dark in colour and approximately 4mm long. Their nests are usually outside in the lawns, under stones or especially under paving where it is sandy. They can travel quite long distances to collect food. They can often be problematical in kitchen and bar areas as sweet foods are generally preferred by this pest and that is often the reason that they enter dwellings for this food source.
Adult bed bugs are approximately 5mm long and are reddish brown in colour. They become darker after feeding. They have a flat oval appearance and feed by taking blood from its host as it is a parasite. Its principle host is humans, although they can exist on other warm blooded animals. These are the honey bee - apis mellifera, the infamous bumble bee - whose genus is bombus and the masonry bee (osmia). These are the 3 main bees that are in Britain. The honey bee and masonry bee can look incredibly similar with a dusty yellowy brown abdomen that is really quite furry. They are often confused with wasps.
These can often be confused with woodworm beetles and can turn up in various places throughout the home and in other properties. These can include the larder beetle, the museum beetle or carpet beetle. These beetles all have larvae which like to feed on proteinous material, more often than not from a dead mouse or a pigeon's nest left in the eaves.
