Software robots advance automation further than previously, and differ from 'business process automation' tools that have concentrated on workflow between humans and business functions, in that the robots take in additional data points to act in quasi-human form, consuming information from multiple IT systems and making judgments on the data as they go.
Cognitive insight applications are typically used where only a machine can really do the job, being exceedingly data intensive and involving high-speed number-crunching that would be beyond human capability. As such, they are unlikely to challenge human jobs, but provide a capability that was not possible previously.
It's because of the relative immaturity that Cognitive Engagement projects to date have been more internally focused, and tried out in pilot mode in circumstances where the risk of failure has less impact for example on Customer Service functions or business reputation. In early pilots, the immaturity might give rise to a high proportion of cases that need to be passed for human intervention.
