At Sheldon (Funeral Services) Ltd, we are proud to say that our business here in Millom is almost as old as the town itself. Established in 1908 by Samuel Sheldon (left), we have served the local area for over a century as an independent, family-run company of funeral directors.

My great grandfather, George Edward Sheldon, arrived here in the early 1870s from Barrow in Furness and prior to that the West Midlands town of Dudley. He owned two shops in Millom selling a variety of goods including lamp oil and candles. The rapid expansion of Millom due to iron ore mining and iron smelting, together with the developing railways, was encouraging to any young entrepreneur looking for a trade.

At a time to suit you, your funeral director will, either in your home or at our office, discuss all the options available to you in order to fulfil your wishes and those of your loved one. Nowadays there is a greater focus on personalisation of funerals and we aim to be flexible and use our wide network of contacts to ensure that all tastes, however unusual, are catered for.
Richard joined the company in 1972 and is in his 43rd year in the funeral business. During this time he has dealt with countless local families across generations, giving him an unparalleled knowledge of the local area and its inhabitants. In his spare time Richard enjoys fell walking and can often be seen on Haverigg sandbanks with his dogs.
We have recently made the difficult decision to cease offering a headstone and memorial service. We understand that choosing a headstone or memorial is a difficult and challenging process. It is a lasting memorial to your loved one and many families feel great pressure to make the right choice. We can offer you information and recommendations for stonemasons.
You need to inform the GP as soon as possible so that they can issue a medical certificate of cause of death. We will collect the deceased, at any time of day or night, and convey them to our chapel of rest. We will then arrange to meet up with you at a convenient time to discuss the funeral arrangements.
