Having qualified at the Birmingham School of Chiropody in 1981 I was invited to become a clinical tutor. Biomechanics was a new subject that was introduced by the USA. It was not long before I travelled to Los Angeles to spend time with Bill Orien DPM and visit the California College of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco.
As Podiatrists we are registered members of the Health & Care Professions Council and have undergone extensive training enabling us to practice. Consultations will provide information on all aspects of foot care and problems arising from poor foot function. Advice on verrucae and warts including treatments with caustics, homeopathic/natural remedies, needling and liquid nitrogen.
As a new patient with biomechanical problems our reception staff will usually advise a mini biomechanical. This is a 40 minute assessment to carry out a brief evaluation and provide a set of temporary orthoses. For long-term management we offer custom made orthoses produced by Plus Laboratory in the USA.
Video Gait Analysis forms an important part of the biomechanical evaluation. It allows the podiatrists to look at the angles and rotation occurring in the lower limb as well as posture generally. Quintic software can be used to slow down the action or pause on a certain frame. It is also used to measure angles and for more complex work such as calculating angular velocities.
After a Biomechanical Examination and Gait analysis your practitioner will take casts of your feet with plaster of paris bandage. This practice almost exclusively uses Plus Laboratories in San Diego, California, to produce direct milled cad-cam orthoses. This product is perhaps one of the most durable of its kind on the market, with accurate prescription writing, they can be made to fit most types of footwear.
