At A R Purnell, we specialise in the supply of quality blue lias polishable flooring to suit your individual needs. With all the visual qualities of it's geological namesake, Blue Lias creates a sense of genuine ambiance and quality.
Blue, Grey & White Lias can be found in prominent buildings; such as the churches, catherdrals and public buildings from the local Manor house to individual cottages up & down the country where Blue, Grey & White Lias can be sourced. A prime example of a 'Blue Lias' town would be Glastonbury in Somerset.
One of the most recognisable building stones in both Somerset and Dorset, blue lias is the product of layers of limestone and shale which were formed during the late Triassic and Jurassic periods - about 195 million years ago! The beautiful blue/grey tint to this rock comes from the formation of pyrite from sulphite and iron and as such the colour varies depending on the dissemination of the pyrite throughout.
Flagstones are synonymous with old country kitchens and medieval church floors, giving any area a simultaneous air of class and age. From the Old Norse word flaga, meaning slab or chip, flagstone is a generic reference to a sedimentary rock which has been split into layers. The most readily found flagstones are made from sandstone which is composed of both quartz and feldspar which is bound by silica, calcite or iron oxide.
