James Barber's Tobacconists was founded in 1867 by the owners Great Grandfather, Joseph. Joseph had plantations and tobacco stemming factories in Kentucky USA. The tobacco was shipped to Liverpool in the UK and then transported by train to Otley where it was manufactured into twist. The business was taken over by his son Fred Barber and then passed on to his son Jack.
James took over from his father Jack in 1980. James has since travelled to Cuba, Dominican Republic, China and all over Europe visiting tobacco plantations, Cigar factories and pipe factories. Today, James specialises in Alfred Dunhill pipes and carries one of the largest selections of Dunhill Pipes in the world.

This year we marked the 154th anniversary of Barber's Tobacconist. We are now one, if not the oldest Tobacconist in United Kingdom. We have gained the trust of our customers worldwide through the years. We want to thank all the members of the Barber family who have worked hard and supported us along the way.
Pipe smoking is the oldest traditional form of smoking. Archaeologists have discovered 2,400-year-old pipes in Russia. Pipes can be made of many different kinds of materials. The most common material for making a pipe is Briar wood, Erica arborea this is a shrub which grows in the Mediterranean and Africa.
Made by a famous London pipe maker for JN Barber Ltd. These pipes are slight seconds and would have retailed for up to 10 times as much in price had they been perfect. The imperfections are minor and will not alter the pipes smoking quality. In most cases it will be very difficult to see the imperfection.
Peterson pipes are one of the most popular pipes in britain today. Best known for their system pipes which have a unique dry system and the special 'P'lip which helps you grip the pipe in your teeth. A few years ago Peterson of Dublin offered only a small range of pipes. Nowadays they offer a wide aray of designs and finishes.
All the pipes in this category are incredibly old pipes but are unsmoked. Most of these pipes were made by Lorenzo in Italy. Sadly, Lorenzo have now ceased trading. A couple of years ago I was at the Intertabac show in Dortmund. Lorenzo were exhibiting there for the last time and had all their old pieces on their stand.
