The Picnic Basket
The Picnic Basket - Love the North East Awards winner (Best delicatessen / Sandwich Shop). All of our ingredients are freshly prepared each morning. We use the very best of local produce, with daily deliveries of market fresh fruit, vegetables, speciality breads, meats and cheeses. So whether it's a sandwich for one or a buffet for one hundred, our menus are designed to suit all of your catering requirements.

We have over 150 sandwich combinations to choose from and a great selection of Speciality breads. We go out of our way to source amazing, natural ingredients and don't use mass produced factory fillings. The Picnic Basket outside catering department has been providing delicious handcrafted buffets for almost 25 years.
Services
The Picnic Basket opened in 1992. Having spent time working in London and America, I moved back to my native North East and quickly noticed that the only fast food on offer in Durham city was soggy sandwiches and second rate sausage rolls. The famous city of Durham with its thriving university, deserved more!
Filled Cocktail Vol-au-vent (Prawns in Marie Rose Sauce, Cream Cheese and Pineapple, Humous and Peppers, Coronation Chicken, Tuna Cucumber and Spring Onion). Indian Party Selection served with Raita Dip (Vegatable Samosa, Onion Bhaji and Vegetable Pakora). All of our finger buffets are served on garnished platters and come with high quality, disposable plates and napkins.

We sometimes have a Friday treat at work and get breakfast sarnies. They are great value and very tasty. Don't know whether this happens just on Fridays but we got free tea/coffee, bottle of water, crisps and biccy!!! Poor Becky couldn't carry them all up the hill and i had to run down to help her πŸ˜„

Just had a chicken, tarragon and grape bun from the picnic basket stall at the end of the Prince Bishop's shopping centre. It was divine. Fresh, well filled and made to order. I will be back.

As I work in the city I often call into the centre for lunch. The food in The Picnic Basket is amazing and the staff are really friendly and helpful. There isn't much space to sit in as it is more a sandwich bar, but there are plenty of seats around Durham to sit and eat at (I recommend down by the riverbank towards the cricket fields on a sunny day). After working here for many years I can safely say that The Picnic Basket is definitely one of Durham's go-to's I can highly recommend for a bite at breakfast or lunch time.

It lives up to the reputation, an excellent place to buy your lunch.
There are some excellent choices of fillings and along with them, choices of bread.
However i went in just after 2pm and some of the fillings looked like they had dried up somewhat so perhaps more needs doing to look after them during the warm weather (note it wasn't the hottest of days).
There isn't much choice for seating either and you can't park outside due to double yellow lines.
All in all of highly recommend The Picnic Basket.
Their loyalty card is a very smart touch which i will definitely be aiming to complete.!
