Hello my name is Barry. I have trained with the Northern Ireland School of Massage in association with the Northern Institute of Massage in England. I am qualified both in Remedial Massage and in Advanced Remedial Massage. I am registered with NAMMT a governing body of massage in the UK and hold full professional insurance.
If you haven't had much experience with massage therapy, you might be wondering what to expect so I hope this will give you some idea of what takes place during a "typical" massage session. If it's your first massage, you will be asked a few questions.

These will be general questions such as the reasons you are getting a massage, current physical condition, medical history, life style and stress level, experiences with specific areas of pain, and whether there is any specific need you want addressed during the massage. It is important at this stage to make sure there aren't any conditions present that rule out having a massage due to any health risks.
Sports massage is a type of Swedish massage that stimulates circulation of blood and lymph fluids. I use trigger point therapy to break down adhesions (knots in the muscles) and increase range of motion at the restricted joints. Post-event sports massage - given shortly after the event, to normalize the body's tissues and reduce the aches and pains.
Deep tissue is a type of massage therapy that is used to treat chronic tension and injuries from overuse, such as tennis elbow and carpal tunnel syndrome. Whilst some of the strokes are the same as in Swedish massage, the pace tends to be slower and pressure is applied more strongly, concentrated on problem areas.
For most of us, the answer is probably 'yes', as massage is non-invasive and considered very low risk for most people. As well as physical benefits, certain types of massage have been shown to help with relaxation which is helpful for people with both acute back problems and chronic back pain. Massage therapy is becoming more widely accepted in the medical community as a credible treatment for many types of back pain.
