Tourism marketing is a process, not an event. Alongside the age-old saga of trends and fashions, of rising expectations and emerging destinations, we need to respond to technological innovations without abandoning the proven and basic principles which attract visitors and service the full spectrum of their needs. Development and marketing is always a mix of the traditional and the new: traditional skills, intuition and innate creativity facilitated by the technology available for realisation, analysis and distribution.
Services
Based in North Pembrokeshire, BFA has provided professional services to the tourism and leisure sector since 1985. Clients have included individual businesses, local authorities, tourist boards, development agencies, trade groups and community groups. Barrie is a Fellow of the Tourism Society and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.
Successful project and business development depends upon extensive background information, sharply honed analytical skills and a sound instinct for the way the present is likely to drive the future. Knowledge, analysis, creativity and foresight make for a potent mixture, but this only comes with length and breadth of experience.
Marketing is THE overarching management discipline. It informs the development of new products, the enhancement of existing products and the refinement of management practices. It is a tactical tool for adjusting demand to match capacity - all-important where seasonality is a real or potential constraint on trading.
More than 80% of tourism businesses employ less than 10 people. The proportion is even higher in most rural holiday destinations. It follows that any appreciation of tourism on the ground depends upon familiarity with Small to Medium Sized Enterprises [SMEs] in every sector of tourism and leisure.
Although primarily involved with strategic planning, Barrie Foster has had considerable experience of working with promotional and communications media throughout the substantial technological changes of the last 40 years. Barrie completed formal photographic training in the early 1960s and worked as a professional photographer for most of that decade.
