We are part of the "good to go" scheme through Visit Scotland and have steps in place to keep our guests and staff safe during this time. Thrumster House is a lived-in family home that has been welcoming visitors on holidays, sporting and fishing trips for many years. Here you will find a warm highland welcome and a house full of character and atmosphere.
We are very pet friendly and have dogs at Thrumster as part of our family. The Castle of Mey, the Queen Mother's holiday home is open to visitors and is 40mins drive from Thrumster. The surrounding area has some lovely woodland walks, and even has an Iron aged Broch in the grounds, some 2 miles away is the Yarrows Archaeological Trail which is one of the largest concentrations of neolithic remains in Europe.

Swartigill is an area along a burn which has been home to a newly discovered site, in the last phase of the excavations led by Yarrows Heritage Trust through UHI and ORCA substantial structures have been unearthed asfter a phase of geo physics were conducted a few years ago. A talk on Friday 7th Sept at Thrumster Village Hall will update the community on the latest findings.
Thrumster House is set in 20 acres of gardens and woodland. This Victorian property is a former laird's house with an Iron Age Broch structure in the grounds along with a walled garden and pond with a summerhouse. The house was designed to host parties of friends who would meet to enjoy all the activities associated with a family-run country estate.
North Yarrows is a traditional 18th century Caithness croft house, which has been converted to provide comfortable accommodation for 4 people. With an enormous fire place in the sitting you can relax with the view over the loch to the adjacent hills looking over the Yarrows archaeological landscape.
The shooting at Thrumster is very varied, being an area of very diverse habitats. The estate has 5,000 acres of grouse moor, and the rest is composed of mixed arable ground, in the small holdings known as crofts, and of rough pasture, marshes and waterside ground near our lochs, burns and ponds. The moor holds good stocks of grouse, and partridge are found on its fringes.
Thrumster has always been a magnet for the falconer, The pinnacle of this noble art is the peregrine falcon against the red grouse, the fastest gamebird on the wing. Our resident population of both ensures that the quarry is not easily taken, and the thrill of the stoop is not always followed by the kill.

A lovely 2 night stay here. Our hosts could not have been more welcoming and hospitable. Breakfast was excellent and served in the most amazing dining room. An interesting Broch to look at in the grounds and an amazing archaeological dig just up the road were an added bonus. Would definitely stay here again 👍

It has been almost 5 years this July (2016) that my husband and I, on our first overseas/family history trip, happened upon Thrumster House and we still talk and share with others, our wonderful memories of our stay in this magical place - so much history, welcoming and cozy atmosphere. Islay and her daughter Catherine made us feel like family. They recommended that we visit Ebenezer Place (Bistro) and the Whaligoe Steps and on Islay's suggestion we were able to go to the Highland Council in Wick and find the gravesite information and visit the gravesites of my Scottish grandparents near by. We stayed in the garden apartment and it was lovely and cosy. It was more than warm enough without the log fire but we put it on for effect and it was lovely. Great WiFi signal and kitchen has everything you need. Really handy having washing machine as well. Owners very helpful and friendly. Gorgeous walks in grounds as well. Definitely recommend.

One of the most amazing traveling experience I had! I arrived on a very wet afternoon, after a long motorcycle ride, and I soon felt welcome like at home. The fireplace was lit for me and I had the most kind hospitality ever. Delicious food, super friendly hosts and a unique house, with a unique charme! If you are not scared of ghosts 😅 don't look further for your next stay! Thank you again for the amazing experience
