Designing an individual house is every bit as demanding as a commercial development; more so perhaps in that the brief of the independent client is often as complicated as that of the property developer.
Our brief was to design a purpose build low energy contemporary dwelling for a family in the rear garden of their former home. The heard of the house is the central double-story dining area adjoining with an open plan living and kitchen area. To reduce the energy use of the building we choice a well insulated timber frame construction finished off with an additional layer of insulated render boards.
Our duty is to ensure that the client has the best building possible by enabling them to select from the best methods, materials and products available. As well as traditional building, these may include, for example, SIPS construction, FSC certified timber, sustainable insulation, renewable energy technologies.

40% of the energy consumed in the UK is used in the construction and use of buildings. The average 4 bedroom home contains around 200 tonnes of materials, some 84% of which are virgin (never before used). Some 12% of those virgin materials will go straight to landfill without ever being used. The Welsh Assembly Government has given the home building industry until 2011 to deliver zero carbon houses.
