Lightwave UK are an LED lighting specialist based in Hampshire. We are distributors of residential, commercial and industrial lighting with a strong bias towards energy efficient LED lighting technologies. We have many years experience in lighting project design and specification, including the latest cutting-edge LED lighting products suitable for all applications.
LED lighting is one of the fastest developing technologies in the world today and can be found in almost all applications where lighting is required. From car headlights to torches, traffic signals to building flood lights; the huge surge in the popularity of LED Lighting is down to the unique properties that it offers.
Recently, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the Nobel Prize in physics to the minds behind new energy-efficient and environmentally friendly lighting. Three scientists - Isamu Akasaki, Hiroski Amano and Shuji Nakamura - were recognized for "the invention of efficient blue light-emitting diodes, which has enabled bright and energy-saving white-light sources."
Solid state devices such as LEDs are subject to very limited wear and tear if operated at low currents and at low temperatures. Many of the LED's produced in the 1970s and 1980s are still in service today. Typical lifetimes quoted are 25,000 to 100,000 hours. By comparison, typical florescent tubes depending on whether they are High-Frequency or Tri-Phosphor are between 10,000 and 18,000 hours.
It is important when installing any lighting products that the IP rating is suitable for the application. In a nutshell, ingress protection (IP) is an international standard for classifying the degree of protection provided against intrusion (body parts such as hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, and water.
