SAIF was established in 1989 to support independent, mostly family owned funeral directors, concerned about the proliferation of larger conglomerates. We currently have more than 970 members across 1,500 sites, as well as an additional 100 Associate members who supply products or services to the funeral profession.
At each Annual General Meeting, there is usually an opportunity to join the committee, with varying numbers of places available. All SAIF members are contacted prior to the AGM about the opportunity to stand for one of the places. Due to the pandemic situation limiting the usual activities carried out by the national president, Mark will be serving a term of two years.
Most people expect to be very upset or distressed when someone close to them has died. What takes many people by surprise is how strong the emotions can be, how they can change very quickly, and how long they last. People around you may seem to think you should be 'back to normal' after a few weeks or months.
The funeral profession is changing. Tradition is being challenged by a growing public preference for personalised ceremonies, the rise of digital technology and, of course, the threat of regulation. As part of its response, SAIF has created a forward-thinking group to help aspiring young funeral directors gain the right skills to become the leaders of tomorrow.
For many, losing a loved one is an emotional experience that needs to be faced only occasionally in a lifetime. Yet, at this very moment of deepest grief, some important and difficult decisions still need to be made. This is where the compassion, professionalism and community commitment of a SAIF independent funeral director can help to make this most difficult of times that little bit more bearable.
