I was concerned that I was asked for my bank card details on arrival including the three digit security number to be photo copied in case I left any damage. I am certain this is not a lawful procedure as leaves you open to fraud and I have no idea what they have done with this information

Has quite a small spiral stairway and there is a nightclub opposite which you can hear and sometimes you can hear other people's TV
Great location for things within the city.
Very pleasant and approachable staff.
Rooms are fine with a kettle, TV and nice room lighting with lovely bathrooms. Beds are comfy too, great sleep, never made breakfast yet.

Worst experience I have ever had. The staff were so rude. I was ignored when I first arrived and when I went to look for a toilet before checking in, I was shouted at by a lady who sat staring at me while I was waiting. She then proceeded to tell me I had to pay even though my email said I had been charged already. She refused to explain that. The staff were all so rude and they refused to honour my reservation and told me to get out! I couldn't believe it! I have never been spoken to in such a horrible way, and the lady in charge continously spoke in another language (very clearly about me) to

I am just giving one star coz there is not a option to give review without star.
THIS WAS THE MOST TERRIBLE HOTEL THAT I EVER BEEN!!!
They require you many things, as for example to checkout until 11 am, if you stay until 1pm you have to pay extra 25 pounds, and if you want checkout after this than you need to pay 65 pounds. This would not be a problem if they give you a good service.
On my first night me and my family was freezing on the room as the heat was not working, when I asked on the reception for extra duvets they guy said no to me. I told him the heat was not working they excuse was

Stayed for four nights. Great location. Spilled takeaway dinner on sheets, called front desk and told I could not get a new set until the following morning… forced to sleep basically in dirty sheets or be cold without them. Had a family member visit, front desk said no more than three people can be in room at time… so bizarre as she was just visiting. Felt like I was at a parents house with rules being watched. Do not recommend…. Just go to your basic chain hotel lesson learned.

Small rooms, decent sized single and double beds, great toilets in each room and overall was a decent sleep for 1 night.

Hotel is well located but I struggled with the Heating. It was not working at all and when I raised this issue the management was rude and offered me portable heating which was making lot of noise in the night. Also, there were issues with warm water as it took almost 15-20 mins for warm water to reach to the Tap. To be honest I struggled with the basics at this hotel. Not worth the money.

Booked to stay here for guns n roses concert paid aprox £140 to stay here as prices had been inflated due to gig (fair enough). The 1st lockdown and travel bans happened when we were due to stay. We were offered a voucher for our stay and because i didnt want to see small businesses suffer i took the voucher rather than ask for a refund. This has turned out to be a mistake. I recently got in touch with the hotel to use my voucher and was told i would need to pay an extra £68 to use it. The actual room rate for that night i wanted was £47 so where £60 came from who knows. While i did not expect

Stayed here for a few nights with friends, the rooms and bathrooms were spotlessly clean. The hotel is close to all amenities which was great. We had a very comfortable bed and a nice quiet room. Due to the pandemic we had bacon rolls delivered to our rooms which was lovely. We had a great stay, great value for money, staff are friendly and very helpful. The hotel is also very secure and has 24 hour reception help desk. The stairs are a nice feature to a historical building. I would highly recommend.

Brilliant location, right in the heart of the city. Very close to the high street, M&S just down the road. Very friendly staff, rooms very cosy, good amount of towels, teas/coffees. Only problem for me is the stairs. I was on the 3rd floor and there was a lot of stairs to climb (it was spiral and very steep). But apart from that it was perfect.

After reading the above review, I have to disagree with expectations of a town centre hotel. In the merchant lodge i have experienced to noisest hotel room i have ever stayed in (new york, london etc etc etc). The noise that you experience is that of the local night club with is just across. I would argue that decent double glazing would simply address the issue. You can here conversations and the persistant music til 4 am. I would not suggest this would be ideal for anyone.
The manageress is far from apologetic and seems to think that that 3am is an acceptable time to go to bed.
