Unvented water heating is the fastest growing sector of the UK market, led by Heatrae Sadia's Megaflo. The Megaflo name has become synonymous with unvented cylinders and is often used to refer to unvented cylinders in general! Today, most new homes have unvented hot water systems installed as standard.
Unvented hot water cylinders store water supplied from a pressurised water supply. This is typically the mains water supply. The heat source may be a gas boiler, electrical heating elements, renewable energy (solar, heat pumps, etc) or any combination of these. The cylinder stores water under relatively high pressures - typically in the region of 2 to 3 bar (20 to 30 metres head).
Unvented Hot Water Systems are subject to the legal requirements of Building Regulation G3 and can only be installed by a "competent person". This is regulated to ensure the installation is safe, and that all essential safety components are correctly installed. Below is a Megaflo cylinder showing some of the components of the system.
The design and installation of any Megaflo or Unvented hot water system is of paramount importance. Correctly sized pipes ensure optimum performance and efficiency in delivering high pressure hot and cold water to all outlets - get this wrong, and the whole system falls apart! All unvented installations are subject to the legal requirements of Building regulation G3 and should only be installed by an "approved installer".
Properties not connected to the gas network can have electric Megaflo unvented cylinders. These are known as Direct cylinders, and are heated with electric immersion heaters. They are ideally suited to small flats with Economy 7 or Economy 10 tariffs. In this case, we always recommend having dual immersion heaters.

Nigel has just fixed the low water pressure problem with our showers. The shower would just stop if any other tap is open in the house and the problem was getting bad to worse. Whilst three other general plumbers came and had a look at it, he was the only one who was able to identify the potential cause and suggested to replace the old valve controlling the inlet/outlet to Unvented cylinder. Guess what, much to our delight it fixed the problem and in fact the very next morning, I sent an email to Nigel saying that was the best shower I had in 3 years. Nigel came across as an expert in his field

As I have only just moved in to the area I did not know where to turn to find a contractor to replace a faulty thermostat.
I saw that that Apex had carried out a service on our Megaflow for the previous owners of our house and contacted them
What a lucky find!
They responded propmptly to my email enquiry and carried out the work exactly as promised and in accordance with their estimate.
I will use them in the future and can highly recommend them

I called Nigel from Apex after my Megaflow boiler broke down. He answered and advised me to email my problem. After explaining the problem with photos he advised on costs and potential problems. He turned up on time fixed the boiler and was extremely professional and helpful. He also gave a discount on the bill. Highly recommended.

I have been struggling for 5 years with hot water in our house, have spent a fortune too. I came across Megaflo unvented site which was enlightening and informative. It’s clear Nigel knows what he’s talking about, he advised me what to do in the interim which has worked straight away, I really can’t thank you enough. Sometimes you feel like your going crazy because other tradesmen say it’s fine and act like they know just to get the money. Appreciate the honesty Nigel, thanks again.
