Opals are slightly more unusual to other gemstones, they are made up of 20% water that is trapped in a silica structure. They are reasonably soft stones measuring a 5 - 6.5 on the Mohs scale meaning they are more susceptible to damage than other stones such as Sapphires and Emeralds. Opals are made up of hydrated Silica and comes in a vast spectrum of colours.
Tanzanites can only be found in one place on our planet, in the northern hills of Merelani in northern Tanzania. This stone is a reasonably new discovery and as its only found in one place is already getting rarer. Tanzanites were discovered and named by Tiffany & co when it was first unearthed 1967.
