The companies first collection launched in 2009 with David Keyte (UW co-founder, director, designer) working from his kitchen table with an aim to make real, honest clothing based on fit and good design, though never over designed.
Universal Works was inspired by David's formative years growing up in a provincial midlands town in the seventies, part of a working class family that loved to dress well; seeing his Dad and Uncles in their work-wear and also when dressing for the weekend.Next, working as a sign-writers apprentice, whilst experiencing the development of eighties sporting and music subcultures.

Cotton Twill has been a staple fabric for us for many years now. It is a plain-weave fabric used for many hundreds of years that has tightly packed yarns making it extremely durable and strong - perfect for workwear and for looking good. Twill is a particularly good fabric for trousers but also makes a fine overshirt, waistcoat or jacket too - so good in fact, that you can buy matching styles in the same twill.
Sitting at the heart of our collections, Universal Works jackets are considered our signature products. Forever associated with the Bakers Jacket, a UW staple, this humble, practical piece has become a wardrobe essential. The Bakers Jacket sits alongside other eponymous workwear pieces such as the Chore Jacket, the Lumber Jacket, the Kyoto and the Coach.
A Universal Works speciality, a great overshirt can be the difference-maker between a good outfit and a brilliant one. We have a suitably strong selection of Overshirts in a variety of fabrics and styles, including our signature Bakers Overshirt in Fine Cord, essential Herringbone Denim styles to the winter-ready Moleskin.
The first time many people learn of Universal Works is after seeing our jackets, most then become advocates for our trousers too. We produce one of the widest collections of contemporary men's trousers in the industry. The cut and drape of our trousers is second to none, our fabrics chosen for comfort and durability.
Founded in 1946, the Sebago company is rich in history. The first-ever shoe released featured the company's patented welt construction & was a big success. By 1970, Sebago released their most recognisable model to date, the iconic 'Dockside' boat shoe. With a firm foundation in quality and style, Universal Works is proud and hugely excited to be releasing another collaboration with this prolific brand.

I used to love this store at it’s old location, but since moving down the street it’s gone somewhat downhill. Staff look disinterested or depressed, not sure I want to shop here again. The last time I visited a female member of staff served me, she came across as cocky and arrogant which put me off buying the clothing I tried on.

Two out of three of the staff members were quite offputting and rude. One of whom I could hear muttering under her breath "this isn't my job" as she was folding clothes. The other, who helped me find a fitting room, was cold and unwilling to help me find other sizes or styles for a pair of trousers I wanted.
