The staff were friendly and efficient enough and seemed to work hard .food was good But what let the whole place down was dim lighting areas especially around the pool . It did not look inviting at all . Bedroom furniture had definitely seen better days and could do with total refurbishment however it was very clean and the bed was very comfortable. Large windows were extremely draughty and cold. It had good points but let down in other ways . Would not recommend or return.

The hotel and grounds are beautiful, but the decor is very very tired. My room was very large, which was nice. The bed was very uncomfortable, and the mattress felt like an old horsehair mattress. The mattress was very grooved, with an uncomfortable sloped feeling, when lying down. There were also marks in the carpet like the one in the picture, which looks like a previous infestation of moths.

Marmite is absolutely right and I like Marmite too.
Give the place 2 minutes and if it doesn't grab you it is probably best to go somewhere else.
No mobile phones in public areas, good food, excellent service, no piped music, no tipping, extensive (and I mean extensive) wine list but no French or German wines. The daftest toilets you have ever seen.
Don't take my word for it, go and see for yourself.

As hotels go, this is as 'Marmite' as they come. You either love it or hate it. I like Marmite, and I love this place. (If you look on Trip Advisor, you'll see a few of the Marmite haters...)
I've stayed here quite a few times over the years, mainly on business, but also out of choice. A 40 bedroom hotel, it has in my mind three extremely memorable features, not including the various themed rooms.
The Loos (Award Winning); The Gin (Expensive, but the best); The owner (John Jenkinson).
The website describes the place very well, and gives you a taste of the eccentric flavour
