Milkwood started out as Woodgate Design - after my family name - when I set the business up in 2000 after first studying Sculpture & then Furniture Design at the old London College of Furniture. My first joinery workshop was on Southgate Road in Islington, London. Eventually I outgrew it and we moved to Kent to a much bigger workshop in an old dairy building on a farm surrounded by woodland.
The farmer who we rent it from remembers milking the cows by hand in our old milking parlour when he was a boy & we decided to incorporate the history of our new premises into the new name for our business. We've been here since 2014 and have invested heavily in new machinery which increases the quality & the possibilities of what we can make.

Working between The Old Dairy, deep in the Kent countryside and at The Printhouse in the heart of East London, Milkwood is a small but perfectly formed company of highly skilled cabinet makers, finishers and fitters serving London and the South East. We've been designing and handcrafting bespoke furniture for homes across London, Kent and beyond since 2000.
We will visit you at home and listen carefully to you so that we understand exactly what your needs from the furniture are. We'll make suggestions on ways to achieve what you want. We'll show you samples of finishes, cabinet door styles and trim details, furniture fitments - anything you want to see first.
Trees and forests are at the heart of what we do at Milkwood. Since we began handmaking bespoke furniture in 2000, we have consistently looked for ways to offer a truly sustainable product. Our work is built to last, using timber from certified sources, made in our workshops powered with 75% renewable energy.

I am so thrilled with the bookcase and linen cupboard which Richard has made for my home. As well as being extremely professional he was a delight to work with; he listened to what I wanted and we worked closely on the design of the bookcase fine -tuning the specifications until they felt just right. The quality of his work is exceptional.

I commissioned Milkwood to build me a home office. We decided on oak for the desk, bookcase and display cabinet. Despite the problems of Covid every detail was discussed and checked by email. The result is fantastic, the workmanship excellent. I had to wait as Richard is so busy but certainly worth the wait. Would highly recommend Milkwood

Richard did an excellent job with designing, manufacturing and fitting the desk and shelves for our home office. He was thoughtful, consultative and insightful. The quality of the materials used is outstanding and the home office looks fantastic. And I am particularly pleased that as part of the project, Milkwood Furniture has now planted 31 trees in a reforestation project through Mossy Earth.

From initial consultation to the final installation of our furniture we have been satisfied in every way. Richard took great care to understand our concept and helped in developing the final design. His work was meticulous throughout and this shows in the fit and detail of the furniture. Richard was always courteous, considerate and punctual and it was pleasure dealing with him.
