Dementia was once seen as an unstoppable runaway train of escalating numbers that was placing undue pressure on nursing home, general and mental health beds, which now has been predicted to lessen over the next decade. What this does is to open the question of what is dementia?
Dementia is still thought by many as just Alzheimer disease although this is the largest diagnostic group seeking care beds; it has become clear that other types of dementia i.e. vascular, alcohol related brain damage, frontal lobe and dementias associated with movement disorders are now causing major issues for older persons services within social services, general hospitals and mental health.
