Our work mainly consists of period property maintenance with a portfolio that includes work on Devon Long Houses, barn conversions, barn restoration, cottages, churches, timber frames and general maintenance.
We have a progressive and forward thinking approach to restoration work which integrates modern and traditional techniques to ensure the highest standards of craftsmanship. The focus is on working with sustainable materials. Whilst covering most aspects of general building work, including working with oak, cob and lime, we also forge close links with specialist craftsmen who work alongside us where needed.

As part of our commitment to fundraising for Devon Air Ambulance we completed the Ben Nevis Challenge in 2015 which saw us climb Ben Nevis, cycle and canoe in a one day epic. We won the event and most importantly raised over 3,000 for Devon Air Ambulance. Character Builders are the 2013 regional winners of the Federation of Master Builders Builder of the Year award in the 'Most Heavenly Builder' category.

We first contacted Character Builders in July of 2017 with an outline of our plans to convert a redundant agricultural barn into a three-bedroom, modern, energy-efficient home.
We were immediately impressed by the way Tom Diffey and Sam Diffey had clearly prepared for our first meeting because they were able to discuss detailed aspects of the plans and offer their professional advice right from the outset.
Their budget indication was detailed, clear and precise and our project was completed on time and to the original budget forecast.
