Porteous Architecture LLP is an award winning Chartered Architects practice established in 2010 by husband and wife team Duncan and Fiona Porteous as practice partners. We have two offices, one in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis and another at Talla na Mara in the Isle of Harris. We also have a studio at our home in Achmore.
The islands are a wild and beautiful place and we work closely with our clients to respond to this extreme environment with buildings that work poetically and economically with the natural landscape and unique cultural identity in a sustainable and contemporary way. Creating the practice was the culmination of many years of experience working both at home and in the U.S. focusing mainly upon bespoke houses and high end cultural tourism projects.

Unashamedly contemporary, and in our 'Island Modern' style, the Island House combines modern living with traditional island materials. This contemporary house in Nairn in the Scottish Highlands reflects it's location by the sea and is based around outdoor living. On the rocks above the waters edge and with it's own private pebble beach, this house on the Isle of Lewis looks out over a dramatic coastal landscape.
Unashamedly contemporary, and in our 'Island Modern' style, the Island House combines modern living with traditional island materials. Still rooted in Hebridean history it uses traditional building materials such as local stone and turf covered roofs with a rust coloured pop-out window. It fuses this with a modern aesthetic to bring island living dramatically into the 21st century.
This three bedroom house on the west of Lewis is a contemporary take on the traditional croft houses or white houses found in the islands. It is designed to have a bright airy interior, whilst the exterior has a traditional pitched slate roof, it truly gets the best of both worlds. The house opens up onto panoramic loch views, where you can watch the sun go down over the Hebridean landscape.
This house is located on a dramatic site in Lewis. With a small budget, but big ideas the clients asked us to design a forever home on the rocks overlooking a panoramic seascape. Cloaked in a mixture of corrugated iron and larch, upon approach the house is nestled into the surrounding rocks. This house however, packs a punch as it opens up on the seaward side to give unending views of the sea and Hebridean landscape.
The Moor House takes its inspiration from traditional island blackhouses and on a more personal note seeks to reflect the client's long family history of living on the same croft for many generations. The two gables are reminiscent of the look of traditional blackhouses where gables were added to the main house.
