A fascinating insight into life in the early 20th century was discovered in the hotel archives. Information given by Laura Beken, a chambermaid who started working at the hotel in 1935 at the age of 25, allows us to see what life was like. Her normal working day started at 6am and ended at 10pm, with two hours off in between.
For more than 160 years, the Great Northern Hotel has been welcoming guests from all corners of the world. Whether you are looking for an intimate ceremony or a grand affair, we have a wedding venue to suit all your needs. As an oasis of historical charm right in the heart of Peterborough, our classic hotel is a great place to host your wedding after-party.

Boxing Day meal here.
Food was lovely, table was decorated beautifully and we were spaced around it nicely.
Staff were friendly.
What stops it being 5 stars...
3 course meal was out within the hour, we felt a bit rushed, could be due to covid and staggering tables, yet with that logic in mind we were sat in a big room with several tables in yet all close together, we were very close to two other large parties which felt unnecessary considering space in the room.
We still enjoyed it - the meal was balanced and light, good wine choices, the gift boxes were a sweet touch & eco crackers get my

Very poor experience. Supposed to go for a 3 course meal. The bread roll didn't even arrive never mind the soup!!! Main course consisted of two slivers of rubbery beef, 3 rock hard roast potatoes, al dentee cauliflower, broccoli ( one of each) and 3 battons of carrots. Service at the bar was sluggish (to be polite) and the stella was off in the function room before shortly suffering the same effect in the hotel bar. To be Frank, overpriced, shoddy service (after requesting staff on numerous occasions). The hotel needs a complete renovation.

A celebratory lunch, very disappointing. Staff were lovely very polite and helpful. Unfortunately the chicken on a bed of grey cabbage with one boiled potato reminded me of school dinners.Sticky toffee pudding stone cold with a drizzle of toffee sauce. A memorable meal for all the wrong reasons.

Avoid if you can. There's much better out there at a much better price!
Very expensive parking (£15 overnight) then poor signage to find the entrance
No lift and lots of stairs.
Room was dirty and ill equipped.
The TV remote was filthy.
The kettle didn't work without holding the button down.
The room contained an extension lead I can only describe as grimy.
The shower provided a trickle of water at best whereas the water from the hot tap violently attacked the sink and surround.
Breakfast was very disappointing given the price. Continental had a very limited choice, cooked was not fresh

Lovely place to grab a quiet coffee, pint or meal while waiting for a train. Very pleasant staff in a traditional setting. We intentionally arrive at the station early to have time to stop in.

Very helpful and friendly staff. Nice room, lovely shower. Very nice breakfast in a large dining room. Just beware of car parking charges. No reduction for hotel guests. £15 a day in week. Need to add this to price of stay.

Dashed out of the railway station at 2.05pm with an hour to spare before the next train and looking forward to a light lunch - sandwich maybe - and lager in the Great Northern Hotel to fortify us. Had to clear empty glasses before we had a table to use. Perused the menu and decided what to eat. Went to the bar where there was no-one to serve. Asked at reception who found a staff member. Oh no food till 4pm! Why were lunch menus on the table? Ended up in Pumpkin cafe at the railway station. They had food, drink and helpful staff!

I was stuck in Peterborough after having fallen asleep on the last train. The staff member (I believe it may have been Mark) who very kindly made me a cup of tea and found me a room last minute absolutely saved my skin! A very kind gesture that won’t be forgotten. The room was also very pleasant and comfortable with all the desired amenities.

It's another jaded once great hotel. A little tired inside but large rooms, high ceilings. Good shower and bathroom, clean white towels and bedding. Good value for money and very central for Peterborough. Would have got 5 stars but sadly when I sat outside early evening two huge rats were in the courtyard right in front of me, running back and forth for several minutes! The hotel is right next to the train station and this probably contributes to the problem but it is what it is ....Yuk!
