Services
Causeway Geotech Ltd employs a wide variety of intrusive site investigation techniques, ranging from trial pitting right through to wireline rotary coring to depths of 120m or more. We have systems to suit all requirements and budgets.
Our team of geotechnical and environmental specialists will be delighted to advise on suitable methods for individual projects, ranging from small-scale investigations for one-off housing developments, to large scale projects for major civil engineering works. All investigation techniques have their advantages and limitations, which can be in terms of the depth of penetration, the type and quality of sample returned, and the costs associated.

While this statement is one of the more hackneyed phrases used within our industry, it is our belief that it is apt and key to our core values. In this modern age of high competition and risk management, it has never before been more prudent to conduct appropriate and adequate investigation of the ground prior to developing it.
Trial pitting can be carried out by a variety of methods, from hand dug pits to machine excavated trenches. Trial pitting is generally carried out to a maximum depth of 4.5m with standard excavation plant and, depending on soil conditions, is generally suitable for most low rise developments. All trial pit investigations are supervised by experienced engineers with a thorough understanding of geology and soil mechanics.
A method of investigation best suited to shallow soils sampling and commonly employed in environmental investigations, dynamic sampling is carried out by either tracked light percussion rigs or hand held (Carl Hamm) samplers. Samples are retrieved in seamless plastic tubes for logging by a suitably qualified engineer.
Light cable percussion boring is a tried and tested method of site investigation for returning information on overburden strata. Using a 4 wheel drive towable rig, or a specialist cut down rig suited to restricted access locations, most sites can be investigated.
Complementary in-situ testing techniques including Standard Penetration Testing, Permeability Testing, Borehole Vane Testing, soft ground sampling methods such as Piston Sampling, can all be carried out in the boreholes in order to provide information for geotechnical design.
