The name "Burslem Pottery" has been around for well over a hundred years. Founded in 1894 by C F Bailey at Scotia Works, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent and made decorated eathenware for domestic use. Sadly, by 1935 Burslem pottery had simply faded away, but today it has been revived and thrives under the ownership of expert ceramic artist, Tracy Bentley.
The Prince's Regeneration Trust 'works to protect, preserve and celebrate our heritage buildings and it has been achieving that at Middleport Pottery, the home of Burleigh. As a consequence, HRH Prince Charles has made several visits to Middleport, in his role as founder of the trust. Prince Charles seems to have taken quiete a shine to Burslem, and clearly admires the ancient art of the potter.
These Martin Brothers inspired grotesques, are hand-cast in high fired stoneware. Each piece is made from several mould castings these are then stuck together using a slip mixture. Then the seams from the moulds are cleaned off, a process that can take hours. The piece is then left to dry, it has to be completely dried before we can fire it to biscuit, if not it may crack.
This is a selection of our designed and sgraffito'd vases. All our vases are hand-cast, then while the vase is still in the clay state, the design is drawn by hand. This drawing is then etched into the clay a method known as sgraffito. The vase then has it's first firing, known as biscuit firing. It is then hand-painted with the various oxide glazes, the etched lines hold the colours in place.
Nothing depicts the potteries better than a bottle kiln, there were hundreds around Stoke on Trent. This small sized bottle kiln is part of our pocket money range, we brought this range out to encourage children to collect hand made and hand painted pottery. Ideal gift for young and old. Chester coaster depicts the black and white timber buildings of Chester, hand drawn hand painted.
