George Harrison (1876-1950) was a painter and poet born in Kettering, Northamptonshire. He studied in Antwerp with his mentor Walter Bonner Gash and began his artistic career sketching scenes of news events for local newspapers including the Kettering Leader. He supplied drawings, poems and articles to the Leader up to the 1940s.
Ralph Hartley (1926-1988) was a landscape artist based in Kettering, Northamptonshire who flourished in the 1960s. He was awarded a Silver Medal at the Paris Salon of 1966. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy, New English Art Club, Royal Society of British Artists and Industrial Painters Group. His work is included in the permanent collection of Northampton Art Gallery and the Alfred East Art Gallery in Kettering.
Thomas Osborne Robinson OBE (1904-1976) was a theatrical designer based in Northampton. He was inspired to become a scenery and costume designer when in 1921 (aged 17) he saw Diaghilev's Russian ballet 'The Sleeping Princess', with scenery and costumes by Leon Bakst. He trained at Northampton School of Art alongside G.H.B. Holland.
Thurston Laidlaw Shoosmith (1865-1933) was born in Northampton. He was educated at Northampton Grammar School before joining the firm of solicitors which his father had established in the town (still practising as Shoosmiths). He became a partner in the firm in 1897. While he was not a professional artist - in the sense that he did not need to sell his paintings to make a living - he was a leading figure in the artistic life of Northampton.
We are pleased to present selected works by Michael Harrison, who has recently been elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists. It is thought to be over 100 years since an artist born in Northamptonshire received the coveted accolade of membership of the RBA. The Society was founded in 1846 and past members include Walter Sickert, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Frank Brangwyn and L.S. Lowry.

Very long street with a lot of shops, restaurants, and bars. Parking situation is a bit weird but we didn't have any trouble. There's a lot to see there and we didn't get to see all of it. Many of the shops were closed when we were there. We did notice something strange: generally speaking, the passers-by on the sidewalks and crossing the street weren't very friendly. It just seemed like everyone was in a bad mood for some weird reason. Other than that, it was a nice quiet walk.
