Made popular in the Victorian era, French Polishing is a technique used to restore furniture, giving it a sympathetic finish and deep colour suitable for older and antique furniture. More modern furniture requires different techniques and finishes which vary from piece to piece. At Abbey Upholstery and French Polishing, our expert team can help you achieve a premium and brand-new look for your furniture.
Over time the interiors of cushions become compressed and are no longer as comfortable as they once were. At Abbey Upholstery, we can offer foam, fibre and feather cushions as an excellent replacement, rejuvenating your chairs and suites. Foam cushions offer more support and return to their original shape, and slowly soften over time.
A previous customer called us back to do another pair of their antique chairs. We are slowly restoring each one as they are needed. Keeping the same green velvet as on other chairs we restore them using traditional materials and techniques. Frame on this Parker knoll rocking chair was stripped back to natural, a cover over the springs, new interiors to match another chair with slight alterations.

Replaced loose covers on 6 dining chairs and love chair. Fabric choice superb and Karen very helpful. Couple of small issues with just the love chair which were sorted most promptly and to our satisfaction. Will recommend and return if we require anything else doing in the future.

2nd time I have used them to cover my suite. First time was 12 years ago and they did a brilliant job then. The standard has not dropped. They are very skilled and their customer service is superb. Nothing is… too much trouble for Karen who I met initially. I was very undecided about cover pattern despite going through loads of pattern books. Karen was very patient and happy to take as long as necessary on the appointment. She then went on to text me lots of examples after initial meeting which she thought I might like. Wait time to get suite covered was not long and the results were perfect

We had our foot stool recovered excellent job done Karen was very helpful advised us about our suite too. Her work is impeccable and it looks perfect in our newly decorated house. Abbey Upholstery have done a great job on our sofa. A large proportion of the plastic clips holding the springs had snapped which left some large dips. I had previously contacted them a year ago but put it on… hold due to a house move. The existing quote still stood when I got back in touch and they arranged the pick up & delivery around my schedule which was great. Now that it is fixed it is so much more comfortable and we would definitely recommend. A great service all round.

We have used ABBEY three times over the last few years and they are consistently good and provide an excellent service. The experience is of working with professionals with pride in the job. They provide advice which is right rather than just chasing the work. In two cases they pointed out to us that the recovering/repairs would cost more than the items were worth. Good range of fabrics and good advice on colour/wearing/matching. They have restored dining chairs, rocking chair and small decorative sewing table for us.
