Birmingham developed as an industrial centre around the extensive canal network and it was here that John Sykes first established a timber business in partnership with James Stevens. John Sykes then set up his own premises in Sheepcote Street in 1862, where he sold many hardwood timbers from a variety of countries.
They supplied Oak and Elm for the wheels of horse-drawn vehicles. George Sykes joined his father in 1870, at the age of 14, and for the next 30 years they worked together to expand the business. After George Sykes took over from his father in 1900 he opened an additional yard in Sheepcote Street and one in Darlaston, where logs were turned into planks now using power-driven saws.

Services
Our hardwood timber merchants business began in Birmingham in 1862 and over 150 years later we remain an independent family owned timber merchant specialising in high quality hardwoods and softwoods. Please note that the images are subject to the limitations of colour reproduction and may not be an accurate representation of the true colour of the timber.
All of our hardwood decking timbers are naturally durable and hard wearing. There is no need to apply any form of treatment as the product will weather to a beautiful silver/grey colour. However decking oil is available to help maintain the natural colour as much as possible, if required. With the range of finishes that we have available decking can also be stained to your preferred colour.
The UK has a long and proud history of producing well constructed beautiful boats. High quality timber is an essential component in the construction of many of the finest boats and Sykes Timber has been a supplier of this to the industry for over 100 years. Our customers include builders of motor yachts, classic sailing yachts and traditional river boats.
We have supplied wood to many makers of musical instruments such as electric and acoustic guitars, bass guitars, double bass, violins, violas, harpsichords, harps and organs to name but a few; we are happy to sell in large or small quantities and can offer nationwide delivery.
We stock an excellent range of hardwoods and softwoods including many that are suitable for making musical instruments whether ongoing commercial requirements or one-off home projects. As specialist hardwood suppliers we understand that the making of musical instruments can have very specific timber requirements.

Very disappointed with the service this company gives and the quality of there timber considering they are not cheap.
There knowledge on joinery is very limited as I found out on delivery of my timber. the sill sections supplied were a joke, the salesman tried telling me that their standard sill section is as per picture on right hand side. but when ordering they accepted the description given by myself ie 95 mm flat top going down to 35 mm at the front was ok and understood.
As you can see from the picture the sill on the left is a standard sill section as supplied by most companies.
