Services
In 1979 I embarked upon a three year full time course in Piano Tuning, Maintenance and Repairs at Newark Technical College. Towards the end of my second year I was selected for a National Piano Tuning Competition organised by the Pianoforte Tuners' Association (PTA) and won First Prize (Student's Class).
I tune stringed keyboard instruments including grand, upright and square pianos, harpsichords, clavichords, and spinets. The default tuning is Equal Temperament but other, historical temperaments can be tuned on request. I tune to concert pitch (A440) and regular tunings will maintain your piano at this pitch.
In the drop-down sections below I have sought to set out the answers to the most frequent questions I'm asked about piano tuning. Please have a look through. Please note that these prices are only an estimate, not a quote, for tuning or repair without having seen the piano first. I try not to book too far in advance; however, demand is high and it may be 4 to 6 weeks before an appointment is available.
Yamaha have been making upright pianos since 1900 and their 'U series' of upright pianos are of the very highest quality. As well as being very popular with schools and colleges, the U1 and U3 models are equally suitable in the home whether for the beginner or professional musician.

Guaranteed for two years, these specially selected pianos have been previously owned by private individuals in Japan, reconditioned and repolished in Japan by Yamaha or their approved workshops and now offered for sale at less than half the cost of an equivalent new Yamaha. If you have come across the Yamaha 'U series' of upright pianos you will know that the quality is of the very best.
The soundboard of my grand piano is covered with a thick layer of dust. Can you clean this for me? Of course. Cleaning the soundboard is quite tricky as it involves getting a cleaning pad underneath the strings. Trying to clean it using a vacuum cleaner just won't work - you can try blowing the dust towards the bass end and wiping up what accumulates there which will get some of the looser material out, but the heavier, greasy dust will stick.
