The immortal design philosophy of Alfred Mylne lives on. Together with Mylne's traditions of elegant styling and excellent performance, we now meticulously add the benefits of new technologies. Alfred Mylne (1872-1951) was one of the most successful yacht designers of his generation. Apprenticed to the famous George Lennox Watson, he became close friends with illustrious rivals including William Fife, Uffa Fox and Olin Stephens.
Alfred Mylne was apprenticed to the famous Scottish shipbuilders, Napier Shanks and Bell. He then worked as draftsman to G.L. Watson, where he was involved in drawing up the plans of the Royal Yacht "Britannia". This "Britannia" was the magnificent racing cutter that was first owned by the Prince of Wales [later King Edward VII] and which later passed to his son, King George V.
Alfred Mylne the first had no children. His nephew - also called Alfred - took over the family firm when he returned from the Second World War, in which he had served in artillery and in the Commandos. Alfred Mylne the second had no formal training as a naval architect but he unquestionably had the gift of a natural eye, as was proved by the many beautiful yachts that emerged from his board.
In 1896, at the age of just 24, a young Alfred Mylne took the courageous decision to set up his own yacht design office in Hope Street, Glasgow. Now, after 120 years of continuous operation, we are celebrating this milestone by announcing the production of a large format, lavishly illustrated book about Alfred Mylne - his life, yachts & legacy.
All our designs are inspired by the values Grace, Pace and Space, established by our founder over 100 years ago.
