Services
The tennis section dates back to 1937 and the 2 blaes courts were in the grounds of Hatton House (built in 1678), one of the great renaissance homes of Scotland. The annual rent for the courts was one shilling (5p) and the clubhouse was an old SMT bus. The owner at that time was William Whitelaw, grandfather of the eminent politician, whose daughters were enthusiastic players.
We cater for those interested in playing friendly or competitive games with fellow members as well as those who are keen to compete against other clubs. Throughout the summer a social club evening is held on a Wednesday, although Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings are also popular. In the winter we run pre-arranged men's and ladies' fours on the floodlit courts on four evenings a week.
The Jim Duncan trophy is contested over February and March. It is a mixed doubles handicap tournament and a preliminary round robin determines the couples progressing to the knock-out stages. You may enter with a partner or choose to be allocated a partner from the pool of individual entries. The Club Championships take place over the summer and finals day is in early September.
Our two floodlit courts are booked for winter tennis on four evenings per week from October to March. Members who are interested in participating submit their availability to the organiser and a schedule is drawn up for each playing session. The floodlights cost 4 for 45 minutes and so a session of 1 hours requires four 2 coins for the meter.
We have two squash courts which are readily available and can be booked in advance. There is no charge for lighting or heating and we also offer free use of racketball equipment. For players interested in squash inter-club competition, we enter a men's team in the SSL East of Scotland League. The league season runs from October to March.
