Grannies
Grannies Tea room and Delicatessen was established around 1984, then the tearoom only held a couple of tables placed within the shop. It was only later, in 1989, that the intimate downstairs tea room was developed within the basement where the old fashioned coal chutes, old style steps, fireplace and flagstone flooring can still be seen.

Till this day Grannies is an established tea room, shop and delicatessen to be found in the busy Town Centre of Alnwick, Northumberland. Grannies is a strong advocate for the local food movement in Alnwick, and offers a wide range of local produce within the deli, shop and tearoom. Grannies is a foodie's heaven and fashioned in an 'Old Curiosity Shop' style, the shop attracts the interest of many for this very reason.curiosity.

We ate downstairs. Very cozy and the ambiance was enhance with vintage photos and antique items. The food (a corn beef hash jacket potato) was delivered very hot and in huge quantity. Can't go wrong here. Simple homemade meals that will impress. Also take time to browse there store items. You will find it hard to resist not walking out with some items to savor later.

Well, we must have been passed this place loads of time's over the years.
Well don't walk passed go in.
Very nice Ickle shop & café.
The staff were fantastic, the young lady who served us downstairs in the café gave Impeccable service & had great knowledge of the building.
They were closing a 4.30pm we went in around 4.05pm but that wasn't a problem. We ordered, drank, ate and left at 4.45pm after buying cakes also...

Very friendly staff. Cosy downstairs, may be very busy when you go, but worth the wait for a table. We went one afternoon but, alas, no room. We went back in the morning and were the first ones in. Result. Reasonable prices and tasty cakes.

When we dropped in to Grannies Tea Room and Delicatessen it was queueing out of the door and unfortunately had no free tables. We decided to book a table for later in the day and were so glad that we did! The old fashioned basement tea room with its fireplace and flagstone flooring is small but perfectly formed. Friendly staff, good selection on the menu, and so many nice cakes was worth the wait.

Not terrible. Decent sandwich, but undressed salad. Downstairs was very noisy with plates being bashed around while being put away/cleaned. Decent selection but couldn't customise much to make the veggie options much better with other ingredients on the menu

Fantastic little café downstairs so quaint, my wife and I only had sandwiches on this visit which were excellent and well presented, but the menu is good and variable. It is small and the steps down are steep, but definitely worth a visit.

Stopped off at Grannies based on the already excellent reviews and wasn't disappointed. We had lovely homemade sandwiches with locally sourced produce. A pot of tea for 2. Lovely atmosphere and not crowded when we visited. Tea room is downstairs and shop upstairs sells local cheeses and produce. Smells amazing when you enter the shop. Friendly service and good value.

At last a coffee place with character. When you tire of Starbucks and Costa this is what you need. Excellent food and low price in a quirky downstairs area. Cakes were moist and sandwiches were packed with fillings. Even the filter coffee was decent. Tiny place which is a little cramped but totally worth a visit. You pay on your way out in the upstairs shop which had interesting items. Cannot fault the place at all on produce.

Went in for a quick bite of lunch when passing through Alnwick, we were so glad we did.

Alnwick has so much choice when it comes to cafe and tea rooms, I guess that must create healthy competition between them all.

The menu of sandwiches, toasties, panini etc. are quite inventive. I chose a Club sandwich, it was a triple-decker of gorgeous fresh bread packed with juicy bacon, tomato, olives etc. perfectly balanced.

Cakes and scones were fabulous too.

Prices incredibly reasonable for a tourist spot.

To compare & contrast the tea rooms of Alnwick- now that would be a fun task!

Quick bus stop on tour. Cute little grocery/deli counter with sit down service downstairs. Call for a reservation for the latter! Gluten free available AND delicious, even as takeaway.

We had a tuna and cheese and a BLT on GF bread. Yum! Wish we could have stayed and had lunch downstairs.

It's really like two businesses. Upstairs you have the delicatessen and sandwich takeaway part and downstairs you have the cafe/restaurant. Their sandwiches are first-rate: stuffed with fillings and served inside amazing rolls. You can be as picky as you like and they'll make sandwiches to satisfy you. I can't recommend them highly enough. And while you're there for your sandwiches, you can grab some pfeffernusse, some interesting cheese and maybe a jar of honey or a chocolate marzipan bar. The cafe bit is very homely and the decoration feels warm and welcoming. Staff are friendly

I've visited Grannies numerous times in the past. I visited on Wednesday with my sister in law and my partner.
I tucked into the Cajun chicken Fajita. Generously filled is a understatement. It was FULL! Salad was generous and the coleslaw was lovely.
My sister in law had the jacket potato with the chicken filling with Tarragon. It wasn't really to her taste and when we told the staff they were disinterested.
The food and atmosphere was excellent. The service in my opinion was below par but it was very busy. I would have expected someone to come and ask if the food was ok but nobody did

This is somewhere that you feel less a diner and more a guest.
The decor is delightful farmhouse style without being twee or pretentious. It does feel pretty crowded at lunch time, but this is down to the shear numbers of people who get their sandwiches here.
At Grannies it isn't about getting A sandwich, it's about getting THE sandwich.
I used to work nearby and bought my sandwiches from them most days; nearly five years after leaving the area I went back whilst on holiday and as I walked in the guy behind the counter gave me a nod and said I'll get your usual. Now that is service

Have never used the cafe, but hope to have the time one day!! Takeaway food is very scrummy. I especially love the salads. The staff are really friendly and are as flexible as possible to suit your needs'. mmmm feeling hungry just thinking about their lunchtime food.
