About us: The School of Hope and Glory sits in the heart of Leicester and was founded in 1991 by its chief instructor Sifu Derek Smith. Sifu Derek has over 31 years coaching, training and competition knowledge. He and his team are C.R.B checked and fully insured. Sifu Derek has over 31 years' experience in Martial Arts.
We practice Lau Gar internally and externally. This means that we condition our bodies and our internal organs by way of traditional training methods. But has now gained popularity due to programs such as the Ultimate Fighting Championships (U.F.C) and K1. Sifu Derek has over 31 years' experience in Martial Arts.
Martial Arts isn't just about combat. It's a fun and novel way of staying in shape. It is a great overall work out. That is designed to improve your fitness. It is also a good way to build your confidence by making you more aware of your surroundings. Not only will you increase your fitness levels.
Grappling is taken from the ancient art of Jujitsu. This type of fighting has taken its place amongst the biggest and the best Martial Art disciplines of today. It was pointed out to me that the U.K trailed behind the United States of America in this art. For the simple fact that all wrestlers and grapplers from the U.K, were lured to the United States by the offer of better pay and better facilities.
What is Haidong Gumdo? Haidong Gumdo is a traditional Korean sword martial art. That has been established by Grandmaster and President Jeong-Ho Kim in 1982. President Kim started sword training in 1961 at the Cheoln Temple in the Gwanahk mountains. In the year of 1982 president Kim began spreading the sword art he had inherited to the world, under the name of Haidong Gumdo.

Very humble teacher and not in it for the money. Derek teaches traditionally but also to be very effective. A very big emphasis goes into training you to be fit and increase your stamina and endurance together with power speed and accuracy. I have been to a few other clubs where there was zero warm up and they cover too many techniques with little time to grasp anything they are all about the money. Will be returning to Derek very soon so he can help me develop my skills

Sifu Derek is extremely brilliant due to his experience and his motivation. He isn't in it for the money and he is a brilliant teacher. I wish I found School of Hope and Glory before a previous club. He has a great amount of experience in multiple fields of martial arts, including Dim Mak!
