The function of the toes, especially the big toe, is to help us to balance and to propel us forward during walking or running. There are fourteen bones in the toes, the big toe has two bones, the others have three, which are amongst the smallest bones in the body. It is not surprising, therefore, that things can and do go wrong with them.
When walking, your heels repeatedly hit the ground with considerable force. They have to be able to absorb the impact and provide a firm support for the weight of the body. When heel pain develops, it is very disabling, making every step a problem and affecting your posture. Pain on the underside of the heel, often caused by a heel spur, is generally known as plantar faciitis.
As our feet grow older they naturally develop more problems, but painful and uncomfortable feet are not a natural part of growing old or something you have to put up with. Do rub in moisturiser if your skin is dry and if it's moist, apply a little baby powder, but don't forget to wipe off any excess with cotton wool.
