A PAT Test (Portable Appliance Testing) is strongly recommended by the government. The Government stresses the need for PAT testing in the new 'Fire Safety Risk Assessment -Offices and shops' which states among other references to electrics. Any electrical appliance that is fitted with a 3 pin domestic plug is required to be tested on a regular basis to ensure that it is in a safe working condition.

The IEE (Institute of Electrical Engineers) has laid down a guideline for the frequency of testing of electrical equipment. This can be found in the IEE Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment. A summary of the suggested frequencies can be downloaded here. Where appropriate, the equipment, devices and systems shall be subject to a suitable system of maintenance.
