Film Optics design and manufacture micron scale surface structured optical films. Our products are found in a broad spectrum of markets: lenticular diffusers and turning films for lighting, Fresnel lenses for use in CPV plants, and films for displays and OLEDs. Based in the UK, we specialise in the design and development of novel and/or complex structures to meet specific client needs.
Our films are manufactured using a reel to reel, UV casting process that reproduces micro structures to extreme accuracy at high speed and low cost. With an in-house, state of the art, manufacturing facility and extensive design and testing resources, we are able to offer a fully comprehensive service from initial optical design consultancy through to commercial scale manufacturing.

LED's are becoming increasingly common in lighting unit design as they offer high efficiency, reliability and extended product lifetime. However because they are high brightness, point light sources they present a number of optical challenges to lighting designers including control of glare and beam angle, and producing large area units with homogenous light output.
Film Optics also offers a range of standard lenticular films or sheets suitable for medium and large format printers using laser, ink-jet or offset printers. These can be used to make both 3D displays and flip animations. We offer small minimium quantities (not the 1 pallet minimum that you find with some distributors) and can also offer a service including image conversion for lenticular, right through to delivering the finished printed article.
At the heart of our business are the UV curable resins that we develop. These resins, or lacquers, are coated onto a clear base film which is then cured hard by ultraviolet light to create the microembossed structures which refract light. The resins provide high fidelity replication of the master mould and have been used to replicate anything from diffraction gratings of 200nm pitch to optical structures of 250+m in height.
Linear Fresnel lenses focus sunlight in one dimension onto a strip. They are used in Concentrated Thermal Solar (CSP) systems to focus sunlight onto heat collection pipes and in low concentration photovoltaic (CPV) systems to concentrate sunlight onto strips of PV material. The optimal concentration ratio of a primary lens is in the region of x15 - x20 suns.
