Back in 2003, David was backpacking in Southern Africa when he took on some volunteering work in Zimbabwe. He was touched by the kindness and humility of the local people he met, but was saddened by the extreme poverty of the area. He took the chance to buy 100 Tonga baskets from the women of Siachilaba with the idea to sell back home in Scotland.
We are a wee company with a strong ethical policy based on our belief that an effective way to improve peoples lives in the developing world is through trading with them. We source our items ourselves by visiting the country and meeting the suppliers. This way we are able to ensure that we know who we are working with and can see first-hand the difference that the ability to sell their goods to a wider market has improved their lives.
There are varying lead times depending on the product as we deal with many different producers across the world. For example our Vietnamese lanterns would take approximately 3-4 weeks for us to order in bulk if we don't hold the stock already. Some suppliers are quicker than this and the majority of the lead time is taken up by shipping.
Zang makes some of our traditional Vietnamese musical instruments at his workshop about half an hours drive from Hanoi. We've been buying from him since 2007. Luis and his family are traditional Guatemalan artisans and sell their crafts in Antigua, a small city in southern Guatemala. We met his lovely family in 2016 when searching for new products.
