Penetrating damp is the ingress of water through the external skin of the building. If left untreated it can cause significant damage to a building both to the internal fabric and structure. If left untreated this penetrating water can cause significant damage to the internal decorations of your property but more important, the structural integrity.
Rising damp is moisture entering the property from the ground up the walls using capillary action. Depending on the age of your property your damp proof course will prevent moisture rising up the walls but older properties often do not have a DPC. A damp proof course in a newer property can fail allowing moisture to bypass the barrier.
Wall tie replacement is often necessary in buildings in the UK constructed after 1920 as they are primarily constructed using cavity walls. The wall tie is a metal tie used to secure the outer wall to the inner brick or block wall. The cavity wall ties used in older buildings did not have a protective coating causing them to perish over time.
