1685 Piano & Harpsichord Tuition is based in Whitley Bay. Established in 1998 by one of the region's most experienced and qualified music teachers, Andrew Soulsby. Last year his students attained 100% merit/distinction in ABRSM examinations, and went on to study at some of the country's most prestigious musical establishments.
As any experienced classical musician will know, 1685 is one of the most significant dates in musical history - the birth of the composer J. S. Bach, a composer relevant to pianists and harpsichordists alike. Andrew specialises in classical music, but of course you can study all styles of piano playing at the 1685 studio in Whitley Bay.

He clearly has an ear and an eye to see what works well and what needs fixing. I hadn't played for many years and was nervous about returning to the keys. But, immediately I was welcomed back in to the world of piano with a cup of coffee and a friendly face (with a great moustache) belonging to a great teacher!
Basically, a piano hits the strings with hammers, and a harpsichord plucks the strings with plectra. The keyboard layout is the same as the piano, but that's pretty much where the similarities stop. Harpsichords are made entirely from wood and come with different specifications, depending on the instrument.
Here at 1685, we have a beautiful, recently restored Flemish harpsichord made by Roger Palmer in 1981. Ideal for continuo playing, and perfect for small orchestral concerts and choral societies, available to hire now. We offer a complete service, including delivery, tuning and emergency repairs, at extremely competitive rates.
