Kim and Huub arrived for some practice early afternoon on the Friday. A winner and runner up. JDRTC v M.C.C v Dedanists A super weekend of top class tennis with a three-way match between JDRTC, M.C.C. and The Dedanists. Emails had been toing and froing between Scott and Johnathan. Jesmond Dene Real Tennis Club is one of only 27 Real Tennis courts in the UK and 46 in the world.
Built in 1894, the court is situated on Matthew Bank between Jesmond and South Gosforth and is only 2-3 miles north of the centre of Newcastle, close to Ilford Road metro. Most of the UK courts date from at least a century ago (1529-1911) but seven courts have been built since 1989 with the newest court, Wellington, built in 2016.

Scott started playing Real Tennis 15 years ago when he started working at Cambridge Real Tennis Club. Since then, his handicap has seen a personal best of 7.8. He reached the final of the Browning Cup and qualified for the British Open. Scott's main draw, however, is teaching the game. In Cambridge he had clients with handicaps ranging from 80+ to 0 and he enjoys lessons at every level.
Jesmond Dene Real Tennis Club is one of only 27 Real Tennis courts in the UK and 46 in the world (Australia 5, France 3, USA 11). Built in 1894, the court is situated on Matthew Bank between Jesmond and South Gosforth and is only 2-3 miles north of the centre of Newcastle. The sport has grown over the last 15 years with four new courts built in England and an expanding membership.
The land surrounding the court is being sold by Newcastle City Council. To avoid the court being sold with the land the club has agreed to take on a 250 year lease on a full-repairing basis. As part of this agreement we have committed to substantial repairs to the building to ensure the future viability of the building and the club.
We are always on the look out for new members and people who would like to try the game before making a decision about membership. We are happy to accommodate anybody and we will fit in with your availability. If you would like to try the game before deciding about membership, we offer a free 1hr introduction with the head professional all racket hire included.
There is parking at the club but access is fairly difficult as the entrance is right on the junction of Matthew Bank and Castle Farm Road. Make sure you let the cars around you know that you are about to use a road they know nothing about as they like to let you know what they think of you. The entrance is also a bit tight for some manoeuvres so please be careful.

Try Real Tennis. If you have even half an adventurous bone in your body, call up and try the original tennis game. It's quirky, it's fun and it's definitely different. The pro is friendly, relaxed and happy to show you the game with 'no obligation' If it was good enough for Henry VIII and Charles II then surely you should give it a go! RM
