The 'Hawk OWL' is a low cost, high endurance multi-camera (near 360° FOV) aerial surveillance system created by Spill Consult Ltd. It consists of a helium filled balloon with cameras mounted around the base. When tethered, the balloon is then raised to provide an aerial vantage point. Real time video is beamed back to the base station for analysis.
Southampton Solent University have a 60m long yacht testing towing tank available for hire. The hull models are mounted on a dynamometer suspended from the rolling carriage. Following purchase of a new dynamometer, we were tasked with commissioning the data acquisition software. The Cussons device interfaces to a PersonalIDAQ USB data acquisition system from Measurement Computing via an Excel plug-in.
Working in partnership with the University of Southampton / National Oceanography Centre to apply their hydro-dynamic models for the North Atlantic Continental Shelf. We were able to turn the IP (mainly in the form of MATHLAB models and CSV files) into an app back end hosted on LAMP plus the anyTide native app for Android and iOS.
Winchester Innovation were approached by the National Oceanography Centre to investigate commercialisation options for the university intellectual property (IP). Tidal height and current prediction is one particular area at which the NOC excels, so we explored how to package, deploy and market this know-how.
