Lansdown Pottery
In 2013 we, John and Penny West converted some farm outbuildings into what has become our studio, showroom and home. We wished to be in a rural environment where we could further develop our ranges of functional stoneware, firing our work in our outdoor kilns, creating our trademark domestic stoneware under the name of Lansdown Pottery.

John has also created a range of individual ceramic pieces, wood and soda fired, which are exhibited and sold under his own name. Our classes take place at our teaching studio at the Centre for Science & Art in Lansdown, Stroud. Access is through the garden gate entrance in Locking Hill. Parking close to the pottery is very restricted and we suggest you use the local car parks.

I began my career as a potter in 1999 when we opened Lansdown Pottery in the Centre for Science and Art in Stroud as a teaching and making workshop. My background before pottery was as a weaver and a teacher, so I changed working with the softness of yarn to the transformation of clay into items to be used.
Thirty spokes are united around the hub of a wheel, but the usefulness of the wheel depends on the space where nothing exists. Clay is moulded into a vessel, but the usefulness of the vessel depends on the space where nothing exists. Doors and windows are cut out of the walls of a house, and the usefulness of the house depends on the space where nothing exists.
Firstly, we have returned to the Stroud Farmers' Market on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month, following closure from March to July. I have been invited to be a part of the Potters' Question Time on the Saturday morning. There will be demonstrations, workshop visits and other events over the two days to create a virtual festival.
