Firstsite began life in 1994 in Colchester's 18th century Minories building. Our innovative programme of exhibitions and professional development for international, British and local Colchester artists grew and flourished.
In 1996, Firstsite became the first visual arts organisation to dedicate an entire gallery to schools' art; and education and participation remains central to our mission, making it ideal for school and educational trips in Colchester, Essex.Firstsite's success in reaching out to new audiences for contemporary art attracted tens of thousands of visitors, and by the early 2000s, it was clear that the organisation had outgrown its Minories home.

Draw and paint along with artist Simon Carter as he demonstrates his own methods of working, using the view from your window as inspiration. Artist Michael Landy talks 'Essexism' with comedian Russell Kane, artists Elsa James and Maria Anastassiou, sociologist Professor Pam Cox and The Only Way is Essex legend, Amy Childs.
Steeped in glorious 1980s aesthetics, 'Censor' is a bloody love letter to the VHS 'video nasty' horror classics of the past. Northern Ballet's bodice-ripping retelling of Dangerous Liaisons is performed and filmed by their incredible dancers in a cinema first that pulls you into their stage.

What an absolute disappointment! A friend suggested we visit for a look round. There were a few parking places for people with disabilities, and there were toilets. There was a book shop and a cafe. That was about it. I had expected a whole gallery of visual arts, a panorama of talent, a feast for the eyes, but no. An added disappointment, was that there was nothing at all to stimulate our senses. There was nothing on show to celebrate our town, its culture, or its talent. Perhaps it's all hidden away in a small room somewhere!

Free art gallery. Very interesting large exhibits. A little bit introspective as it was all about Essex. One installation was about excess landfill and the throwaway society. A little at odds with this was an installation by Michael Landy about systematically destroying all his possessions and sending the waste to the local landfill! If he'd put them on eBay I probably would have bought some of them!

This is a great place if you're visiting Colchester and like exhibitions or like me, have a child or two and need to keep them busy in summer when the weather is rubbish. There are free children's activities every day from 10am to 2.30 pm and interesting exhibitions for people of all ages. At the back of the venue, you'll find a café. Entry is free but you can make a donation (suggested £5) at donation points using your debit or credit card. Very nice and helpful staff and volunteers around. Pop in, you won't be disappointed.
