Richard Barry is a British artist. He started his formal education in the mid 1970's at Plymouth School of Art in the UK, where he was taught by Alexander Mackenzie, a leading member of the 'St Ives' group. Subsequently he attended Stoke-on-Trent School of Art, gained a degree and then moved to London, working in illustration for major clients such as 'Saatchi and Saatchi' and 'J Walter Thompson'.
At the end of the 1990's he returned to fine art and his iconic paintings are now highly sought after. His studio and home is a converted chapel in Cornwall.

I consider that you, the observer, should be allowed to interpret a painting or a drawing in your own way. Too faithful a representation by an artist can often diminish a sense of mystery and frustrate your inclination to create a personal narrative from the image.
That isn't to say I'm not a great deal interested in shape, tone, edge, colour, depth, texture and composition - all the usual things - when I work, but simply that I'm also trying to encourage your individual response to the subject, partly by employing marks that are, with a bit of luck, painterly, reasonably spontaneous and not too 'deadly' accurate.
