Chef Douglas Smith has been impressing the food critics with his cooking talents for almost 20 years. He has won a string of national awards and cooked for a host of VIP diners. Now one of Scotland's most accomplished chefs, Douglas has taken the bold step of opening his own cafj-bar-brasserie - Saffy's - in the heart of Ayr.
A glance at some of the comments he inspired while head chef at Enterkine House and McCallum's Oyster Bar only serve to confirm his status as one of the country's most exciting culinary talents. In the few months since Saffy's opened, Douglas has already attracted a growing customer base amongst town centre shoppers, the business community and visitors to town.

Doesn't look great from the outside and wouldn't ever have gone in if I hadn't heard so many good things about it. Tried it out for lunch and beat my expectations. Really friendly staff and cosy wee place. Delicious food and even chose a vegetarian option which I am not. Only thing to change is decor outside. Hidden gem.

Today's long overdue visit confirmed that Saffys is still my top of the pops for its stunning vegetarian menu. It was a totally festive affair with paper hats being worn by all the office party lunchers and some lovely xmas decorations perking up a dreich dark December day.
I plumped for the house salad despite it being a hearty soup kinda day, and it didn't disappoint. The curry mayo and croutons lifted the dish nicely. Choosing mains was pretty tough with so much on offer, but provencal vegetables and goats cheese bake with pesto won the day. It was lick-the-plate delicious!

This was my choice for a farewell evening meal with mother at the end of a fortnight vacation in Ayrshire. She is now raving about this place to all her friends!
For me, this shows the power of online research or word of mouth - although Saffy's is easily accessible in Ayr town centre and just across from the Mercure Hotel, it is not at all on the main drag. But Saffy's is highly ranked on Tripadvisor.
What we have here is a forty cover (estimate) bistro which doesn't really catch the eye from the street. You can't really see much through the windows, and nothing of the signage
