Reid Wire is the manufacturing arm of the holding company Wm Reid and Sons (Wireworkers) Ltd which was formed in 1889. Reid Wire Ltd is a small firm operating out of Glasgow's East End specialising in the design and manufacture of wire, steel and sheet metalwork products. Manufacture of wirework components to supply a wide range of industrial and business markets in the UK.
The history of Reid Wire spans more than 10 decades. It was in 1882 that William Reid, who at that time owned and managed a small dairy in Glasgow's "Rotten Row", started to manufacture wire window guards for the overnight security of his family business. Neighbouring shopkeepers liked the guards so much that William Reid was soon flooded with orders for them, resulting in a challenging change of direction for the company.
Wire mesh - filter gauzes, screens - woven or welded mesh in mild steel, galvanised, stainless, aluminium, copper, brass or specialised heat treatment alloys. Applications include fencing, partitioning, reinforcements, guards, cages etc. where the versatility and strength of theses materials has proved beneficial.
Reid Wire supplied all the new fencing for the Whitecart Flood Defence Project in Glasgow, working with Volker Stevin. Reid Wire have been working on site at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre in conjunction with City Building to carry out works for the upcoming Commonwealth Games. This included steelwork, glass and metal balustrades, stairs, gates and handrails.
A family run Glasgow business with over one hundred years of history is set to play a role in the construction of the city's Commonwealth Games. Reid Wire has won a contract to design and build stairs, railings and balustrades in the thirty eight hectare athletes village. During the games, the village - which is located opposite the Sir Chris Hoy Veldrome - will be home to 6,500 athletes and officials.
