I grew up with parents who were hat makers. From a very young age, I remember they had two treadle sewing machines! As a child, I was very eager to learn to sew. I have a distinct memory of being too little to sit on a chair to treadle and sew at the same time! However, I was clever enough to come up with the idea to ask my younger brother to treadle at the bottom, so that I could do the sewing on the top!
Having a millinery business, there were always lots of beautiful fabric delivered to my house and my dear parents would always allow me to have small snippets of my choice. Happily I would spend hours making lovely things (at least I thought they were!), such as little purses, handbags and head/hair bands.
