Established in 1780, Pugh & Son is one of the oldest private businesses left in the town. Now it is in the fourth generation of the Pugh family to serve the Harborough area for over eighty years. It was acquired in 1922 by William and Bernhard Pugh from John Henry Clarke, a well known figure in Harborough society.
He himself had recently moved from a small saddlers shop opposite St. Dionysius Church to an imposing building on Coventry Road and fronting on the Square, newly built with the widening of the old Lubenham Lane.

Situated on Adam and Eve Street, Market Harborough. No doubt, if an officious bystander were to ask where these names originated most people would say in the Book of Genesis in the Old Testament, and perhaps one would add, they were the first human beings. Then one may legitimately ask but who came first, Adam or Eve? Similar to the chicken and egg conundrum. The most sensible response is to say, Adam and Eve in Hebrew mean Mr Man and Mrs Life, thus, they are symbolic names representing both the first human beings and every human being. After scratching one's head, because one is a little perplexed
