The National Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers (NAPIT) define a portable appliance as 'any electrical appliance which can, or is intended to, be moved whilst connected to an electrical supply'.

When testing 240V appliances, the tests are governed by what type of appliance is being tested. If the appliance has a Double Box symbol it is classed as a class two device and a visual inspection is carried out, followed by an Insulation Resistance Test.
